Directions to SUNY @ Stony Brook
by plane,
by car,
by ferry, or
by train.
The Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip is 25 minutes
(16 miles) from the campus and is serviced by direct flights by
major airlines and commuter lines.
Kennedy (JFK) and LaGuardia
airports
are about an hour and a
half (approx. 50 miles) to the west. If renting a car, follow the
car directions below. If arriving in JFK or LaGuardia,
an airport shared shuttle bus will cost you about $40.00 for the trip to
Stony Brook (count on about a two hour ride), or about $60.00 to $80.00 for
an airport limo or a taxi service. If you arrive at Islip MacArthur airport,
it will cost you about $20.00 to $30.00 for a limo or a taxi service.
However, if you call in advance and arrange a Limo
service with a limo service operating locally (see below),
you will get much cheaper rates.

Spartan's rates, for example, are:
From the west (Manhattan)- Take the Long Island Expressway
(LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan (I-495).
From the north (Bronx)- Take the Throgs Neck Bridge (I-295) or
Whitestone Bridge (I-678) to the Long Island Expressway (I-495).
From the south (Staten Island / New Jersey) - Take the Verrazano
Bridge onto the Belt parkway east. Note the Belt Parkway changes into
the Southern Parkway.
Continue on to Southern Parkway east and take the Sunken Meadow Parkway north
to the Long Island Expressway (I-495).
From LaGuardia Airport - Follow the Grand Central Parkway south to
the Long Island Expressway (I-495).
From Kennedy Airport - Take
the Belt parkway east. Note the Belt Parkway changes into
the Southern Parkway.
Continue on to Southern Parkway east and take the Sunken Meadow Parkway north
to the Long Island Expressway (I-495).
Once on the Long Island Expressway (I-495) take it east to exit 62.
Follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for nine miles. The Main Entrance to the university
is on the left towards the end of Nicolls Road (once you passed the University Hospital towers on your right,)
see the map.
Take the Main Entrance
and at the first stop sign,
you will see the Wang Center on your right across. Make a right at
the first stop sign
and look for a faculty/staff parking lot on your right.
Park your car in the lot and go to the Student Activity Center and register.
You can obtain parking permits at the registration.
If the parking lot is full, find any other parking lot that has a faculty/staff
parking sign, and follow the procedure described above.
Car ferries cross Long Island Sound from
Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island
and from New London, Connecticut to Orient Point, Long Island.
From Port Jefferson - Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road and go
south for one-half mile on Nicolls Road. The main entrance will be on the right.
From Orient Point - Take Route 25 west to the Long Island Expressway
(I-495) and take exit 62 north onto Nicolls Road. Drive north for nine miles.

Take the Long Island Railroad's
Port Jefferson line from Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan to
Stony Brook. (See
map.) The train station is at the north border of the campus, and bus
service to the central campus is provided. However, you can easily
walk from the Stony Brook train
station to the Student Activity Center in 10 minutes. Some
trains require changing at Jamaica Station and some at Huntington Station.
Normally, taxis will be waiting at the station; if not call Lindy's
(631-473-0707) for taxi service.
