Physics 126 is the second semester of the three semester introduction to "classical physics" and covers fluids, harmonic oscillators, waves, thermodynamics, light and optics. The course covers the subjects required for students majoring in physical science and engineering and students must be able to use mathematics as it is applied to a wide range of topics. There is a lecture with four recitation/lab sections.
The text is Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Giancoli, (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2008). All problems will be assigned on the web, so you may use either Ed. 3 or Ed. 4.
Homework will be assigned using www.masteringphysics.com. You should purchase the access code at the same time you buy your text book. The course code is MCGREW2011PHY126. Since the first homework assignment is due at the beginning of the second week, you need to login and get access now. Be sure and enter your SBU student number for your Id since that is how we will match you to the official grade book. . The homework tends to run a little ahead of the lecture. This is intentional since I want you to look at the book and think about it before coming to lecture.
The Course Calendar gives the expected schedule for lecture topics, homework assignments, laboratories, and exams. Also check the syllabus which lists the specific requirements that must be met to succeed in this class. The syllabus also has examples of quizes and exams. You should also be aware of the laboratory instruction manual which is on the web. You should print a copy of each manual before coming to the lab.
